Nobilis

Adolphe Halard opened Nobilis in 1928 on rue Bonaparte in Paris, a stone's throw from the Beaux-Arts academy. The name is Latin and means noble, distinguished, of good taste — a statement of intent the house has lived up to ever since. The business is still family-owned and is run today by the founder's grandson Norman Halard.

A decisive figure in the house's history is Suzanne Fontan. Adolphe Halard discovered her in 1939 while she was dressing windows at Galeries Lafayette, and she went on to create the printed floral patterns in pastel that became the house's early signature — with poetic names such as Allons voir si la rose and Bouquet à deux sous. Since then Nobilis has broadened towards material and surface: textured wallpapers and weaves where the effect arises in the light rather than in the motif.

Among our collections are Nobilis wallpapers and Nobilis fabrics, often chosen for modern rooms that need warmth without pattern. A textured wallpaper brings a wall to life even in a plain colour, and the fabrics work both as upholstery and as curtain fabric, where the depth of the weave shows against the light. The combination is useful in new builds, where surfaces otherwise easily end up flat.
