Nain carpets are very exclusive carpets from the small town of Nain which is located right next to the famous city of Esfahan. Most Nain people made carpets with indentations from Esfahan until the 1930s when the Nain carpets arrived. This means that there are no antique Nain carpets.
Very elegant and detailed bushes with leaves and flowers (figural) are the most common motif. In addition to the plant decoration, the central field is also often decorated with a variety of animals, mainly birds resting on a branch or flying, as well as gazelles and harpy eagles.
Depending on the fineness of the carpet, the warp is made of either silk or wool, while most carpets have a silk weft relief or are entirely made of silk. The density and exclusivity of the carpet is also judged by “La”. The term “La” is Persian for layers and refers to the number of layers of threads used in each warp thread during production. The fewer, the finer the carpet. The finest carpets are either 4 La (sharla) or 6 La (shishla) with a knot density of over 1,000,000 knots/sqm. These carpets are either entirely made of silk or with strong silk wefts and cork wool.
The finest wool from the sheep is called cow wool which is located in the neck of the sheep with a very high content of wool fat in it, which makes it soft and easier to work with. Other qualities of the carpets that are more commonly referred to as utility carpets are 9 La (nohla) and 12 La (davazdahla). These carpets have a lower knot density and are very durable carpets with wool and silk as materials.
