PROJECT- Upplandsgatan

Upplandsgatan

In the heart of homely Vasastan, our task was to breathe new life into a flat that a young family had recently bought. The challenge was to modernise the 125-square-metre flat while preserving its late 19th-century architecture. To achieve the contemporary home the family wanted, the sketches began to move towards a more open plan.
The decision to relocate the kitchen and open up a wall where a bedroom had previously been allowed the home to invite a more sociable atmosphere. Thanks to the move, with the kitchen now placed more centrally in the flat, the space became a more natural gathering point. The new layout was fundamental to achieving the right feel, but the choice of materials and other details also played an important role in creating a cohesive atmosphere.
The flat's generous ceiling height contributed to an airy impression, and the natural light from outside meant that a classic Scandinavian palette in grey tones combined with touches of wood felt fitting.
The brass elements and dusty pink shades added a fashionable, sophisticated feel. By restoring details such as mouldings, mirror panels and ceiling stucco, the end result signals a unified interplay between old and new.

As the family loved cooking, it was important that the kitchen combined aesthetically pleasing and practical materials. The Calacatta worktop from Neolith is not only pleasing to the eye but also resistant to stains, scratches and heat. It is also used as the splashback and conceals the extractor hood.

The bespoke hallway unit in the entrance, with stone details, a leather bench and a mirrored-glass backdrop, not only makes a striking impression but also offers practical storage.

One challenge with the new layout was finding a place for the dining table. The solution was a kitchen island that also serves as a dining table for the whole family to gather around.
