Visual Comfort for Visual Comfort & Co.

What is Visual Comfort?

Visual Comfort is a lighting brand offering ceiling lights, pendants, flush mounts and wall lights for many types of room. The range is defined by clear proportions, carefully worked materials and fixtures that both provide light and form part of the interior. The focus here is on Visual Comfort for Visual Comfort & Co. The collection makes it possible to build several layers of light without every fixture needing to share the same form.

Which Visual Comfort lights are the most popular?

Rivers Pendant Medium, Connery Ceiling Light and Menil Ceiling Light show three different scales of ceiling lighting. For walls there are Cranston Wall Light Large, Petrel Wall Light 18 inch and Cabinet Wall Light. The choice comes down to the scale of the room, the ceiling height and whether the fixture is to provide task lighting, general lighting or mainly atmosphere. For flush mounts and smaller rooms, it is better to prioritise a low profile and even light distribution.

Where do Visual Comfort lights work best?

Visual Comfort lights suit the living room, dining room, hallway and bedroom. Pendants work over tables and kitchen islands, flush mounts in rooms with lower ceilings, and wall lights beside mirrors, art and beds, or as a soft layer in the living room. In the hallway, a wall light or flush mount can give a more even light without taking up space in the walkway.

How do I choose the right Visual Comfort light?

Start with the room's dimensions, the ceiling height and the job the light needs to do. Check the fixture's diameter, height and position before you order. Rivers Pendant Small and Andros Pendant Medium suit different scales, while Menil Ceiling Light Large needs more volume around it. Also consider the colour temperature of the light source, dimming, and how the fixture looks both lit and unlit.

What sets Visual Comfort lights apart from one another?

The difference lies in form, light distribution, material and scale. An open pendant gives a different quality of light from a flush mount or wall light. Tall wall lights such as Petrel Wall Light 30 inch work vertically, while Cranston Wall Light Small gives a more concentrated light. That is why fixtures should be chosen as parts of a lighting plan, not simply as individual decorative objects.

Can I get help choosing Visual Comfort lights?

Yes. Start with the visualisation on the product page when you are logged in to assess scale and placement. Then you can visit the showroom at Sturegatan 20 in Stockholm. We will help you plan light levels, fixture combinations and placement together with furniture and rugs. Do bring a floor plan, the ceiling height and photos so that placement and light levels can be discussed in more concrete terms.

Lighting in several layers

A well-lit room needs more than a single ceiling light. General, task and ambient lighting should work together. A pendant over the table gives direction, wall lights lift vertical surfaces and a flush mount can fill the room without dominating it. On the lighting page you can compare more types of fixture.

Connery Ceiling Light 40 inch and Menil Ceiling Light Large are fixtures that require ceiling height and furniture layout to be planned together. Do not just measure the ceiling; check sightlines and the distance to tables, doors and walkways too.

Pendants over tables and kitchen islands

Rivers Pendant Medium and Andros Pendant Medium work well when the light needs to be gathered over a surface. Over a long table, several smaller pendants can give a better rhythm than a single large one. Over a round table, a central fixture with a clear form often works best.

Wall lights for function and atmosphere

Wall lights can be used beside a bed, mirror, bookcase or artwork. They create a softer layer of light and mean the ceiling light need not be as strong. Cranston Wall Light Large and Cranston Wall Light Small give two scales for the same type of placement.

Petrel Wall Light, Petrel Wall Light 18 inch and Petrel Wall Light 30 inch show how height affects the expression. A taller model gives a clearer verticality and suits larger expanses of wall.

Materials and finishes

Metal, glass and shades respond differently to daylight and to the fixture's own light source. A polished metal reflects its surroundings, while a matt finish is calmer. Glass can diffuse or expose the light source. So choose the light source and dimming at the same time as the fixture.

Plan the placement before installation

Measure the ceiling height and the clear height beneath the pendant.

Decide whether the light should be directed, diffuse or decorative.

Plan for dimming where the room is used in several ways.

Use wall lights to even out the contrast between light and dark zones.

On the dining room, hallway and bedroom pages you can see how lighting interacts with different types of room. For bespoke solutions, there is also made-to-order.

Ceiling light size and height

A ceiling light needs to be judged in relation to both ceiling height and furniture. Over a dining table the fixture can hang lower, since the table protects the walkway. In a hallway or in the middle of a living room, more clear height is required. Also check how large the fixture appears from several angles. A model that feels balanced from below can dominate when seen from a doorway or staircase.

Light source and dimming

The fixture's form is only part of the result. The light source's colour temperature, output and spread affect how materials and colours are perceived. Warmer light gives softer tones in wood and textiles, while a cooler light can feel sharper. Dimming is especially valuable in rooms used in several ways. Check compatibility between light source, dimmer and fixture before installation.

Wall lights as architectural light

Wall lights can mark an axis, frame a mirror or create rhythm along a corridor. They also contribute light on vertical surfaces, which makes the room feel brighter without the ceiling light needing to be strong. The placement should be determined by the fixture's height and light distribution. Beside a bed or reading spot, function needs to guide more than symmetry.

Coordinate finishes without matching everything

Fixtures in the same room need not be identical. It is often enough that they share a finish, a material tone or a similar line. A larger pendant can be sculptural while the wall lights are simpler. Do, however, avoid too many competing metals and colour temperatures. When the lighting is planned as a group, the whole becomes calmer and more considered.

Lighting for different rooms

In the dining room the light needs to gather the table without glare. In the living room, several light sources should support conversation, reading and evening light. The bedroom often calls for directed lights by the bed and a softer general light. The hallway needs even orientation and ideally light on the walls. The same fixture can therefore work differently depending on placement and light source. Start from the activity in the room and then build a combination of ceiling, wall and supplementary light. Also check how the light falls on walls and art, since vertical surfaces have a great effect on the room's perceived light level.
