Visual Comfort & Co.

Designer-led lighting since 1987

Visual Comfort & Co. has no in-house design department. Instead, the house invites interior designers to draw entire series — Kelly Wearstler, AERIN, Thomas O'Brien, Suzanne Kasler, Barbara Barry and some twenty more. That is why the range spans so widely, from restrained neoclassical to overtly decorative. Each series bears the mark of its creator.

The fixtures are made in solid metal with hand-applied finishes. No two pieces are ever exactly alike, and the small differences in the surface are intentional — they let the fixture age rather than wear out.

Finding the right fixture

The ceiling light sets the room's light level and is the first thing you see. Above a dining table, the lower edge should sit 60–70 cm above the tabletop, and the width should ideally correspond to roughly half the tabletop.

The flush ceiling light sits against the ceiling and spreads the light widely. It solves rooms with lower ceilings, hallways and passages where a hanging fixture would be in the way.

Wall lights work with the depth of the room rather than its general light. Two flanking a mirror or a bed give a softer result than a single point in the ceiling.

Table lamps and floor lamps make the light personal. They work best together with other lighting, never as the room's only light source.

Light source and dimming

Bulbs are not included. We recommend dimmable and warm white, around 2700 K — that is where brass and nickel render their tones best. As a rule, a room needs three to five points of light at different heights to feel finished, and they should be controllable independently.

Come in and see them lit

Lighting is hard to judge from a picture — the spread of light, the scale and the tone of the metal only reveal themselves in real life. We have a selection lit in the showroom at Sturegatan 20 in Östermalm.

We also help with lighting planning: how many points a room needs, where they should sit and which dimensions work with the ceiling height and furnishing. Get in touch or come in.
